Hi, I’m Kallyn!

My Story

Growing up in Mississippi, whenever my Grandpa saw me, he always squeezed my cheeks together to make a “fish mouth” and then he’d give me a big ol’ kiss. In fact, I think he took this favorite image of me when I was two. This crinkled photo is so dear to me. It holds a treasured memory of what I look like at that age, how big I can make my cheeks (take that, fish!) and a memory of a very special relationship.

The very notion that a fleeting moment captured holds so much of our memories keeps me passionate about documenting families. These images are our living history. It’s also why I strive for connection over convention. Because you already have what it takes to make great images. You just need someone there to see you and catch the magic of the moment.

My Experience

I run this photography business that reflects my heart and soul. I support families as a postpartum doula in Durham, North Carolina where I live and frolic. I am also a spouse, sister, daughter, friend and lover of life! My heart work is dismantling white supremacy first and foremost and for me, that starts with focussing on Black maternal health and social justice issues. I’m a Farmer’s Market fanatic as well as a supporter of local businesses and restaurants. One day, I hope to be a puppet with Paperhand Puppet Intervention.

Being photographed should be a fun, full-family experience. My background as a 20-year career photojournalist has prepped me for capturing unpredictable moments. And in my work as a former birth doula, I spent time with families developing a “birth guide,” which provided a loose framework for their birth experience, built upon personality and preference, allowing for fluidity and flexibility.

My Approach

Both of those career paths have shaped the way that I photograph families. When you work with me, you can expect someone who will be an experienced guide while encouraging spontaneity. With all the planning out of the way, my goal is to remove away the stress, move in the ease and document your unique rhythms. No pressure. Just realness.
